What is oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a naturally occurring peptide hormone and neurotransmitter involved in social, reproductive and behavioural biology.
What has it been studied for?
Human research has examined social cognition, attention to social cues and theory-of-mind tasks. Some studies report effects, while larger and longer trials have also produced mixed or null results.
How strong is the evidence?
The human literature is substantial but heterogeneous. Results depend on population, task, dose, delivery method and study design, so it should not be reduced to a simple “bonding hormone” claim.
